“Acting is living truthfully under imaginary circumstances.” How can we accomplish that?
The Meisner technique tries to accomplish this by being in the moment, listening, freely being able to use your imagination, and letting yourself be affected truthfully by the other human in front of you.
In Level 1, you will…
-learn a brief history of Sanford Meisner and the Meisner Technique.
-put to practice the Repetition exercises - mechanical repetition and what causes a shift (“event”) or rules of changes.
Level 1 focuses on the heart of the work, living truthfully in a scene. Through the use of the core repetition exercises, the actor learns what it means to live from moment to moment, while taking in everything from their scene partner and connecting more deeply to their acting impulses.
This course is process oriented and is based on exercises done with partners and outside of class assignments. The outside of class assignments will require that actors meet with a partner once weekly in addition to the course’s regular meeting time. Class exercises will include repetition and partner work, the reality of doing, the three moment game, the pinch and the ouch, coming to the door, and being alone onstage. The rate at which we work through the Meisner process will be determined on a day-to-day basis. Advancing to a new step in the process will be contingent on the class's overall understanding of, and success in, each exercise.
